Steering Wheel

When you get behind the wheel and find you can’t turn the keys in the ignition, it’s because our steering wheel is locked. It’s not a serious problem and there’s nothing wrong with you vehicle, but you’ll definitely want tips for how to get moving again on your Danvers errands, or to be sure you’ll never be stranded miles from Newburyport! At Honda North, we thought you’d appreciate a guide with some easy steps for solving this problem:

Steps to Unlocking a Steering Wheel

Although the steps to unlocking your steering wheel are simple, it’s best to make sure you understand them well before starting. This way, you can ensure you won’t damage any internal parts by accident.

  • Avoid Excessive Force — Even though it’s frustrating and seems like it could simply be stuck, applying force won’t work unlock your steering wheel. In fact, trying too hard to force the wheel to turn can damage parts of the steering mechanism. Instead of using force, you should turn the key to the “on” position and try varying amounts of pressure as you wiggle the wheel back and forth.
  • Try Different Techniques — If you can’t get the key to the “on” position, slowly turn it in the ignition with your right hand while you slowly adjust the steering wheel back and forth with your left. The goal here is to realign the key-turn and steering mechanisms, and allow you to start your car.
  • Use a Different Key — Your key may have become worn or bent and is no longer aligning correctly, so try your spare car key. If you don’t have a spare, stop by Honda North near Lynn and we’ll make you a new one on-the-spot, using the serial number of your vehicle — so you you’re getting a brand-new key, not a copy of the worn one.
